The Effect Of Migraines
Almost 40 million Americans suffer from Migraines. The effects of migraines can be absolutely debilitating. Every year, millions of Americans go to their doctor in order to find relief from migraine headaches. Quite often, medication helps migraines for only a small amount of time. There has been much research done about migraines and their treatment.
Botox And Migraines
In 2010 Botox was approved for the treatment of migraines in adults. Much research has been done on Botox, and it was proven that Botox can be highly effective. Botox treatment is given in different intervals over about 12 weeks. During the course of treatment, an individual will receive multiple Botox injections. These injections are generally given in the neck and in the head.
Botox is effective because it can freeze muscles and prevent the spasms that bring on migraines. A large number of adults, teens, and children have found little success with traditional medicine methods of migraine relief.
Migraines In Children And Teens
A Large number of adults have stated that they began to have migraines when they were children or teenagers. Since that is the case, an individual who begins to have migraines as a child could stand the risk of suffering from migraines for the majority of their life. Unfortunately, children and teenagers are suffering the devastating effects of migraines as well.
New studies have been done that have proven that these injections also can be useful for a younger audience. The University of California Irvine had doing an ongoing investigation on the health benefits of Botox injection on individuals under the age of 18. This was a study that was done over the course of five years. Multiple studies have found that Botox is a safe and effective treatment in adults when it comes to migraines. Scientist and investigators have been able to receive grants in order to do more studies on the effectiveness and the safeness of Botox injections in young adults as well.
How Migraines Affect Our Youth
Unfortunately, children and teenagers are suffering the devastating effects of migraines. A large amount of youth who suffer from severe migraines have had to make drastic changes in their lives in order to deal with migraines. Some young migraine sufferers have had to go into homeschool because their migraines are so debilitating. For several of these children, they may have migraines for many days and because of that, they are not able to keep up with the demands of traditional school. Apart from that, traditional treatments like Tylenol and Advil can cause nausea and drowsiness. Dr Shah is a pediatrician who has been treating children with migraine headaches for years. She has been using off label Botox with many of these children who are suffering from severe migraines. She found that children had an improvement in their migraine headaches over the course of five years, and that the Botox treatments had no major side effects. These children report that the intensity and the length of their migraines went down.
Hope For Youth With Migraines
Since so many children and teens are suffering from chronic migraines, FDA approved Botox injections could definitely provide them with huge relief. This is especially true for those children and young adults who experience 15 or more migraine attacks a day. It is good to know that there are many studies that are being done about the benefits of Botox injection in teens and children because these young adults deserve to be able to lead a normal life that is free from chronic pain.
